On Tuesday, June 3, 2014, members of the Oakland County Board of Commissioners’ Public Services Committee’s Curbing Gun Violence Study Group, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, the National Project ChildSafe/NSSF organization and Crime Stoppers, along with more than 38 law enforcement agencies from across Oakland County and the Oakland County Board of Commissioners participated in a news conference.  Information was shared about the Gun Safety Lock Giveaway program for Gun Safety Awareness Day on June 6th, in recognition of June as National Safety Month.  County officials distributed the free cable-style gun locks provided courtesy of National Project ChildSafe/NSSF to the local law agencies.  Residents can pick up a free gun safety lock from their local law enforcement agencies on June 6th, click here for a list of participating agencies.  

An update on the ongoing efforts of the Curbing Gun Violence Study Group for Oakland County was given as part of the special presentation by the Curbing Gun Violence Study Group members, who include: Commissioner Michael Spisz, Commissioner Bill Dwyer, Commissioner Marcia Gershenson, Commissioner Helaine Zack and Commissioner Gary R. McGillivray.Information about mental health resources were provided at the news conference and a brief showing of Mental Health Matters, Video Game Ratings and Gun Safety Lock public service announcements were shown.

Free Gun Safety Locks are available at the Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety.  Please stop in and see one of our communications specialist at the front desk to obtain a gun lock.
