Summary of Tree Removal Regulations for Residential Parcels
Purpose & Intent
The City of Bloomfield Hills adopted Chapter 22, Article II to protect and preserve trees, recognizing the value in preserving the established character of the community. .
The City of Bloomfield Hills strongly regulates tree removal to preserve its woodland character. Every tree removal on your property requires a plan review by the building department, prior to any work commencing.
Applicability
• Contact the Building Department at (248) 644-1520 before beginning any tree removal work
• A tree removal permit is required for removal of any regulated tree
• Removal activity must follow standards in Sec. 22-24
Key Definitions
• Regulated Tree – A tree subject to protection under the ordinance.
• Removable Tree – Certain regulated trees that may be removed under defined conditions.
• Landmark Tree – A tree of exceptional size, age, or significance, with stronger ordinance protections.
Residential Property Regulations
• Diseased or infested trees must be treated or removed upon city notice.
• Unauthorized removal, damage, or destruction of regulated trees is prohibited.
• Protect trees during construction with fencing/barriers.
• Replacement plantings may be required.
Enforcement & Penalties
• Violations of Tree and Woodlands Ordinance are misdemeanors
• City may require replacement trees, restitution payments, or impose liens.
• Stop work orders and violations are issued for non-compliance
